Mexican Food

I was thinking of all the delicious food we ate on our trip to Cabo over the holidays. We went to a cheesy local mexican restaurant this weekend here in Portland and I really enjoyed eating a big plate of enchiladas but it doesn't compare to tacos, salsa bars and home cooked soup.
The boy took most of our photos in Mexico, but something I always grab his camera and shoot is delicious food we eat. This is just some of it.
I'll be back tomorrow to share the surprise we did for the boy's birthday Sunday.

Happy Friday!

Doesn't this car make you smile? Minty green goodness. I wish I had this thing to tow our shop around with. Adorable, right?

This weekend we have lots of celebrating of this guy to do. Last nite we had drinks and then went and bought him a new computer (his first in 7 years!). Tonite he's moved his New Jack Swing DJ night to the Foggy Notion on North Lombard and we're celebrating his birthday to the sweet sweet sounds of Bel Biv Devoe and New Edition, which sounds just about right.

Happy Weekend!

Second Bedroom Upgrade

I can't believe I've been working from home for over a year now. When I think about it, I can't even remember what it's like to commute and have co-workers I see every day. I'd put off converting our second bedroom into a full blown office for a while (it did double duty as a guest bedroom and office) but once Wanderlust started up, I couldn't deny that I needed more space.
I know it may seem cluttered or disjointed to those of you who love the clean, empty look that seems so popular in home decor right now, but that's just not me. I want to be surrounded by the things that I love and as long as I keep things organized, I'm happy to have containers full of notebooks and paper birds hanging from my wall.

We sold our bed to a friend and bought Expedit bookshelves from Ikea to get everything up off the floor. That was really our biggest investment for this change (maybe $70 when you subtract the money we made off the bed) and I'm just so happy with all the room I have now!
We're still working on some finishing touches and I'm purposefully not showing you the Wanderlust corner which is stacked to the ceiling with inventory and display items.

It's just so nice to walk into this space every morning and be ready to get to work or be creative. Next step: upgrade on the boys computer. We're picking up a laptop for him tomorrow, just in time for his birthday!

Marketplace Party

SO. My voice was on national radio a couple Friday's ago. We had a few friends over to listen to the Marketplace interview and drink champagne and eat some snacks. It felt so great to have our friends excited and supportive. I was surprised how good it felt to hear myself on the radio! Just this little idea and all this hard work and now I'm on Marketplace.
Anyway, I set up this little spread complete with bird cheese markers! 2011 has been pretty good to me so far and I'm hoping it continues this climb... I can't wait to see how it all happens.

Good Finds.

I've had some luck at estate sales recently. A lot of the stuff I keep for Wanderlust but some stuff I just have to save for me. Here are some things I've picked up the past couple weekends that will be staying with us.
A gorgeous 1955 Holiday magazine. The ads, the typography. I'm sort of in love with every page and I wish I'd found more! I can't wait to scan some of the really great pages and share that soon!

This sequin face mask is awesome. Last weekend I went to the estate of a women who owned a children's dance studio in Hillsboro. I had to refrain from buying 60's and 70's tutus and costumes so I picked up this little mask as a consolation.

Sparkle rick rack! I pick this up anytime I find it for a good price. I've got quite a stash going right now and I love the packaging and different colors.

I didn't start going to estate sales until I moved to Portland. I just never really heard about them in Seattle and didn't have a car to drive out to the good ones anyway. It's become my favorite way to find vintage items for a lot of reasons. Usually stuff is in way better condition than at a thrift store because someone actually kept these items and took care of them. You can also find multiples or sets of things like napkins, glasses or even a dress with the matching coat easily. And finally the prices are usually a lot better than your average thrift store. Go on Sundays and usually everything under $50 is half off.

SXSW Outfit

We have our plane tickets and started RSVP'ing to parties. It's official, we're going to Austin for SXSW this year! I'm so excited and I'm already planning what I'll take with me for those 85 degree days, running from show to show. This looks just about right.

Dress: Spotted Moth/Purse: Mod Cloth/Shoes: Urban Outfitters.

Pielettes

Last nite the lovely and talented-in-all-things-culinary Julia Crain and I made some rhubarb pielettes. We used cupcake tins instead of your standard pie plate and the result was both adorable and delicious. We're definitely trying other flavors soon (My suggestions: raspberry and peach). They'd be absolutely perfect for a birthday if someone's not a big cake fan, right? Yum.

Playing Dress Up: Valentine's Edition

I couldn't get the boy to take a photo with his fancy camera of my outfit yesterday, so I had to be industrious and used the photobooth feature on my computer. A long winded way of saying, please excuse the crappiness of the photos and appreciate the cuteness of the outfit!
Last nite I was gifted the so so so incredibly lovely Giant Dwarf heartlette crown from the boy and it went perfectly with the outfit I was already wearing. I love it when that happens.
I wore: 70's red vintage skirt/H&M striped top/old cardigan from Nordstorm Rack/black stretch belt from Mexico/the necklace I wore on my wedding day (perfect to pull out for Valentines!)/vintage brooch-a gift from the boy years ago.

Day For Love

Happy Valentine's Day! I'm wearing an adorable outfit (if I do say so myself) and can't wait for the boy to come home so we can enjoy each others company at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Beaker and Flask!
The longer we're together the sillier it seems to celebrate this holiday because we tend to tell each other 'I love you', go out to romantic dinners and spend time together all the time! However, I do love pink, hearts, flowers and chocolate all of which seem to be everywhere this time of year, so I'm not going to split hairs, I'm looking forward to the evening.
Oh and as I was writing this the boy had flowers delivered from Anna Mara Flowers. Lovely tulips!

Single or happily coupled, I hope you enjoy the day for what it is. I'll be back later this week with a few amazing estate sale finds from the weekend!

Project Restyle 1

One of my favorite blogs is A Beautiful Mess. The girl who writes it (Elsie) is hosting a really fun challenge called Project Restyle. I've wanted to participate in it but I hadn't found the right dress. When this one came along in a thrift store a few days ago I knew it was the perfect thing to transform!

the old dress

This also coincides with a trunk show Wanderlust is doing at the end of March where I'll have several restyled vintage dresses for sale. If I can part with this one (which fits me perfectly by the way) then I may have this one for sale there.

the new dress

It was really simple changes that made this dress wearable. I took the oversized sleeves off and made the arm holes smaller so it has a better fit on the top. Then I shortened it, hemming the bottom so it's knee length or just above which is super popular right now. I love the fabric, it's pretty out-there but n ow that it has a modern look to it, the pattern looks fun instead of dated.

CD Sleeves

One of our lovely friends, April, runs the Artichoke Gallery and Collective. They had a Valentine's themed opening at one of our favorite bars last week and asked the boy to contribute a mix CD. He picked the songs and I made these cute CD sleeves to put them in. He called the mix 'Heart on Sleeve' and I used the same idea as the Valentine heart I shared last week to make these.
I'm really loving Valentine's day this year! So many cute ideas and DIYs floating around the internets. I just saw this one and I'm in love!

Outfitted for Spring

I'm really enjoying making these outfit boards for Spring. Everything here is from the awesome Modcloth. I'd pair this with a cream cardigan too!

Busy busy bee.

Here's another little peek at our newly redone second bedroom (now office!). I brought this chair in from our bedroom and I'm loving sitting in the corner and singing with the boy or sorting through Wanderlust inventory.

Today I'm finishing my regular work week as well as getting ready for a VERY busy Wanderlust weekend. We have the Pink Show tonight from 6-9pm at the Splendorporium (there's a great write-up about it here). On Sunday we have the super-discount Bargain Hunting sale at the Crystal Ballroom from 12-5pm. I've marked down a ton of stuff and I'm hoping we sell a ton there to clear out my inventory a bit. Come on by if you're in Portland!

Happy February- DIY heart

I made this adorable lace heart for our photo shoot last weekend and it was so simple and turned out so cute, I just had to share the simple instructions so you can make your own.

You'll need:
Red (or pink) cardstock
A doily (I got mine at the dollar store!)
Spray adhesive
Scissors

Instructions:
Cute a large heart out of your construction paper. Take the doily and lay it on a piece of cardboard or something you don't mind ruining and spray it with a thick coating of spray adhesive. Press the doily onto the heart with the sprayed side down. Let it dry. Take your scissors and cut the doily so it follows the shape of the heart.

Write a little love note on the back and give it to your favorite valentine.

So simple!
